Luxuel 132 vs 272: Which Cap Should You Buy?
The short version
- Both caps are cleared under the same FDA 510(k), K261253. Same 650nm wavelength, same 5mW per diode, same 30-minute session three times a week.
- They are the same size cap. The 272 does not cover more of your head — it puts more diodes across the same area.
- The difference is density: 1.42 mW/cm² against 2.93 mW/cm². That is a real hardware difference, and it is not a promise of a better result.
- $599 against $899. The 132 is a complete cleared laser cap, not a trial version.
- Availability: the Laser Cap 132 is currently sold out with no confirmed restock date. The Laser Cap 272 at $899 is the cap you can buy today.
The short answer
The 132 is a complete, FDA-cleared 650nm laser cap and we would not sell it if we thought otherwise — but it is currently sold out, so the 272 is the cap you can actually buy today.
If it doesn't, buy the 272. It is the densest array we build and the configuration the premium end of this category settled on, and most people who can stretch to it would rather not spend a year wondering whether they should have.
That is genuinely the whole decision. What follows is why we won't dress it up as more than that.
What is identical
| Laser Cap 132 | Laser Cap 272 | |
|---|---|---|
| FDA 510(k) clearance | K261253 | K261253 |
| Wavelength | 650nm ± 10nm | 650nm ± 10nm |
| Output per diode | 5mW | 5mW |
| Laser classification | Class 3R (IEC 60825-1) | Class 3R (IEC 60825-1) |
| Session | 30 min, 3× per week | 30 min, 3× per week |
| Cap size and scalp coverage | Identical | Identical |
| Power | Mains via USB, corded | Mains via USB, corded |
| Warranty | 2 years | 2 years |
Both are named in the same clearance letter. Neither is a downgraded or "lite" version of the other — they are two configurations of one cleared device.
What actually differs
| Laser Cap 132 | Laser Cap 272 | |
|---|---|---|
| Laser diodes | 132 | 272 |
| Power density | 1.42 mW/cm² | 2.93 mW/cm² |
| Price | $599 | $899 |
That's it. Three rows.
Because the cap is the same size in both, adding diodes raises the density of light across that area rather than extending it over more of your head. That is exactly why the power density figure roughly doubles while the coverage area does not change at all. Both figures come from the FDA clearance summary, not from us.
Common questions
Does the 272 work better or faster?
We're not going to tell you it does, because our clearance does not say that and we are not going to invent it. K261253 states plainly that diode count does not alter the device's mechanism of action, energy delivery per treatment area, or safety profile.
What we can tell you is what is true and checkable: the 272 is a denser, more uniform array, it is the specification the premium end of the market chose, and it costs $300 more. Anyone selling you a diode count as a promise about your hair is telling you something they cannot support. What FDA 510(k) cleared actually means →
Does the 272 cover more of my scalp?
No. Every model in this family shares the same cap, so the treated area is the same on both. The extra diodes go across that same area, more densely and more evenly — they do not reach further.
This is the single most common misunderstanding about diode counts across the whole category, and it is worth being clear about even though the clarification costs us the easier sales pitch.
Is the 132 the "cheap" one?
It is the less expensive one, which is not the same thing. It carries the same clearance, the same wavelength, the same per-diode output, the same session and the same warranty. Nothing about it is a stripped-down build.
If we only sold one cap, the 132 is the one we would sell. How our pricing works →
Which one do most people choose?
We are a founding-release brand and we are not going to invent a statistic to answer that. When we have enough real orders to say something true about it, we will. Why we have no reviews yet →
Can I start with the 132 and upgrade later?
There is no upgrade path or trade-in, and we would rather say so than imply one exists. What does apply is our ordinary return window on unused, unopened devices, and the warranty on both. Buy the one you actually want.
Does either need a different routine?
No. 30 minutes, three times a week, on both. Both are mains powered over USB and stay plugged in for the session. Consistency over months is what the research rewards, and it matters far more than which of the two you own. The honest results timeline →
How to decide, plainly
The 132 would suit you if $599 is the number that makes this a sensible purchase for you, you want a genuine cleared laser cap without a four-figure decision attached, or you would rather put the difference toward being consistent for a year. It is currently sold out, so this is a comparison point rather than an option today.
Buy the 272 if you want the densest array we build and the diode configuration the premium caps are known for, and the price difference is not what decides it for you.
Do not buy either on the assumption that the bigger number will do something the smaller one won't. That is the one reason we would rather you didn't.
