How Often Should You Use a Laser Cap?

The short version

  • The Luxuel protocol is three 30-minute sessions per week — not daily.
  • More light is not better. Low-level laser therapy has a documented biphasic dose response: past an optimal dose, the effect falls off rather than climbing.
  • The strongest home-use trials dosed every other day, not every day.
  • Missing sessions is the real risk, not under-dosing. Consistency across months is what the research measures.

The protocol, plainly

Three sessions a week. Thirty minutes each. That's it — and there is no version of the routine where doing more earns you a better outcome faster.

Most people ask the opposite question first, so let's answer it directly.

Can you use a laser cap every day?

You can physically wear it daily without hurting yourself — the therapy is non-thermal and the cap is a Class 3R device at 5mW per diode. But daily use is not the protocol we recommend, and it is not what the evidence is built on.

Low-level laser therapy follows a biphasic dose response. Below a certain dose there is too little energy to do anything; above it, the response flattens and then declines. A review of the phenomenon across low-level light therapy describes exactly this pattern — the optimal dose sits in a window, and exceeding it produces less benefit, not more. That is why the number on the box is not "as often as possible". The protocol is a dose, in the same sense that a medication is a dose.

What the trials actually dosed

The double-blind randomised trial most often cited for home-use red-light devices in men dosed participants every other day — 60 treatments of 25 minutes over 16 weeks — and reported a significant increase in hair counts against a sham device. It did not test daily use. Read the trial →

A separate 26-week sham-controlled multicentre trial of a hand-held Class 3R laser device also used a three-times-weekly schedule rather than a daily one. Read that trial →

The 2019 meta-analysis pooling eleven randomised comparisons reports increased hair density with low-level laser therapy versus sham across men and women, while noting real differences between the devices and schedules studied. Three-times-weekly sits inside that studied range. Read the meta-analysis →

Frequently asked

Can I use a laser cap every day?

It is not recommended and it is not what the published protocols used. Low-level laser therapy has a biphasic dose response, meaning there is an optimal dose beyond which the effect diminishes. The Luxuel protocol is three 30-minute sessions per week.

Is three times a week enough?

Yes — three sessions a week is inside the dosing range used in the sham-controlled trials of home-use red-light devices, including a trial that dosed every other day across 16 weeks and a 26-week trial that dosed three times a week.

What if I miss a session?

Resume your normal schedule at the next session. Do not double up to compensate. One missed session over months of use is unimportant; a pattern of missed weeks is the single most common reason people conclude the therapy did nothing for them.

Can I do two sessions in one day?

No. Two sessions in a day does not deliver the benefit of two days, and it moves you further from the dose the research supports. Space sessions out across the week.

Does a longer session work better than 30 minutes?

No. The session length is part of the dose. Thirty minutes is the designed exposure for this device — extending it does not scale the outcome.

What time of day should I use it?

Whichever time you will actually keep. The therapy has no circadian dependency, so the only variable that matters is whether the session happens. Most people who stay consistent anchor it to something fixed — after a shower, or during a specific evening habit.

How long do I keep this up?

Pattern hair loss is progressive, so the honest answer is: as long as you want the support to continue. The clinical studies measured outcomes at 16–26 weeks of consistent use, which is the earliest point a fair assessment is possible. Read the honest timeline → · What happens if you stop →

Why we're strict about this

An easier version of this page would tell you to use the cap as much as you like, because "more" feels like more value for $899. It isn't true, and a customer who wears the cap daily for two months and sees nothing is a customer we misled — not one we served.

Three sessions a week, for months, is the whole discipline. Everything else about this device is designed so that discipline is easy to keep.
