How to Use a Laser Cap Correctly

The short version

  • Clean, dry, unparted hair. No product, no oils, no gels — anything sitting on the scalp is between the light and the follicle.
  • The cap sits flat against the scalp. Not perched on a bun, not over a headband, not on top of a hat.
  • Thirty minutes, then take it off. Sitting still is not required — the cap is mains-powered, so stay within reach of the cable.
  • The most common mistake is not technique. It's stopping.

Before the session

Wash and dry your hair, or use it on clean dry hair from earlier in the day. The one thing that genuinely interferes with a light-based therapy is a physical barrier on the scalp. Styling product, thick conditioner left in, hair oils, dry shampoo build-up, sunscreen on an exposed scalp — all of it sits exactly where the light needs to arrive.

Don't use it on wet hair. Wet hair mats down into a denser layer, and you should not be handling a mains-powered device with a wet head regardless.

Skip the hat hair. If you've had a cap or helmet on, give the scalp a minute. You want hair sitting naturally, not compressed into a flat mat.

What to avoid beforehand

  • No styling products on session days, or wash them out first.
  • No hair dye or chemical treatment on the same day. Let the scalp settle — if your scalp is irritated or tender from a chemical service, wait until it isn't.
  • Don't use it on sunburnt, broken, or inflamed scalp skin. Wait until the skin is normal.
  • Don't take anything to "boost" the session. There is no photosensitising supplement that makes this work better, and photosensitivity is a reason to speak to a clinician, not something to induce on purpose.
  • If you use a topical on your scalp, apply it after the session rather than before, so it isn't forming a layer during it — and follow the instructions that came with the topical.

During the session

Seat the cap so the inner surface is against your scalp. Pull it down the way you'd wear a real cap. Long hair should be down and loose rather than tied up — a bun holds the device off the scalp across the whole crown.

Nothing between the cap and your head. No liner, no bandana, no beanie. It defeats the entire point.

You will not feel anything, and that is correct. The therapy is non-thermal. There is no warmth to chase and no sensation that signals it's working. If you feel real heat or discomfort, stop and check the device rather than pushing through it.

Thirty minutes. Then take it off. The session length is part of the dose, not a minimum. Why longer isn't better →

You can move around. Read, work, watch something. The cap is mains-powered via a cable, so plan to stay within reach of the outlet — this is not a device you wear on a walk.

Frequently asked

What should I do before using a laser cap?

Use it on clean, dry hair with no styling product, oils, or dry shampoo on the scalp. Wear your hair down rather than tied up, and make sure the inside of the cap sits directly against your scalp.

What should you not do before a laser session?

Don't apply styling product or scalp oils, don't use it on wet hair, don't use it on sunburnt or broken skin, and don't schedule a session for the same day as a chemical hair service. Apply scalp topicals after the session rather than before.

Does hair length or thickness change how I should use it?

Longer or denser hair should be worn loose and unparted so the cap can reach the scalp. Don't part your hair into sections — parting is a technique for hand-held comb devices, not for a cap that covers the whole scalp at once.

Do I need to sit still during a session?

No. You only need the cap seated properly and the cable reachable. Moving around does not affect the therapy.

Should I feel anything?

No. The therapy is non-thermal and most people feel nothing at all. An absence of sensation is not a sign that the device isn't working. Genuine heat or pain is a reason to stop and check the device.

Can I use it while my hair is wet from the shower?

No — dry it first. Wet hair mats into a denser layer over the scalp, and a mains-powered device and a wet head are a combination to avoid.

Does it matter what time of day I use it?

No. Use it whenever you will reliably keep the habit.

The mistake that actually matters

Everything above is worth getting right, but none of it is the reason people see nothing. The reason is missed sessions. Technique errors cost you a fraction of a dose; a skipped fortnight costs you six sessions.
