A transition zone is exactly the border region a receding hairline creates. So the honest answer is: yes, the area in question is within what has been measured — for men in that Norwood range, over that duration.
Where it stops working, and why
Low-level laser therapy is aimed at follicles that are still cycling — miniaturising, producing finer and shorter hairs, but present. Past that point there is nothing for the therapy to support. This is the real dividing line — and it isn't crown versus hairline, it's active follicles versus none.
Practically:
- A softening, thinning hairline with fine hairs still coming through is the situation the transition-zone measurement speaks to.
- A hard, shiny, completely bare temple of long standing is not. No light-based device restores a follicle that is gone.
- The temples are the toughest zone regardless of method. Frontotemporal recession is the pattern that responds least well across the board — this is not a shortcoming unique to laser therapy.

How to judge your own hairline
Look for fine, short, wispy hairs in the receding area. Their presence means follicles are still cycling. Smooth, hairless skin means they aren't.
